Indian By Night Lamp

Tonk Flipflops - by Nadine Herrmann
We have explored this in our work in which East meets West, Local meets Global, where we try and see each other’s environment through someone else’s eyes. The result is a series of objects fusing Indian and European elements; hybriding different vision, attitudes and craftsmanship; incorporating religion, etiquette and wellbeing. It is our contribution to a new global way of working, shaping a new cultural landscape.

THE CULTURAL
MONGRELS - There’s
a modern need for cultural hybriding. Contemporary society challenges individuals
and cultures to break boundaries, open up borders and see beyond the familiar.
The next generation will increasingly consist of cross-cultural individuals
with a patchwork attitude to all aspects of life.
A person used to be shaped by a close family environment and the living conditions
of the place one was born; this is still partly the case, but our identities
are also shaped from various other sources today. The new global structures
have made humans much more mobile and fidgety. We move around different cities
in a much higher rate, often involving living in different countries and even
different continents.
Cultural
identities today resemble the equivalent of a multicoloured street dog - a
mongrel.
This project is just one of many possible examples of collaborations and products
that might emerge in the future. The challenge for us designers is to explore
what aspects are best to merge, to enhance, preserve and what to loose. Can
we keep alive who we are, old traditions, cultural heritage and part of our
history and combine it with our dreams, the future and who we would like to
be.
